One of the higher education sector’s most respected academics was accused by a female member of staff of inappropriate workplace behavior.
The woman, who had been sacked for incompetence, claimed the academic had put his arms around her on more than one occasion.
The scholar protested his innocence and we believed him.
Nonetheless, the university was keen to pay compensation to the woman to avoid the embarrassment of a potential legal case. We persuaded them to delay writing a cheque until we had investigated the background.
We discovered she had succeeded in squeezing money from at least one previous employer by making similar allegations.
